Roulette is a game of luck. All a player needs to do to win is predict where the ball is going to land. There are no mathematical ways to increase your chances of winning, but there is a way to increase your odds against the house. Avoid American Roulette and stick with European Roulette, which has a slightly lower house advantage.
First played in the 17th century, Roulette is now one of the most popluar gambling games in Europe. The most famous casino known for playing roulette is in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Roulette BASICS
A max of eight players play against the house which is represented by the croupier, also called the dealer. The Dealer spins the roulette wheel and handles the wagers and payouts. In the European version, the wheel has 37 slots which represents 36 numbers and one zero. In the US version most of the roulette wheels have a single zero and a double zero therefore 38 slots.OBJECT OF THE GAME
The object of the game is to predict where the ball is going to land. Obviously, luck plays a very important part in roulette. A player must predict where the ball will land after each spin in order to win, which is not easy by any means.Common betting "systems": One way to bet is to bet on numbers that have been coming up with greater than average frequency. Betting on the so-called 'hot' numbers or winning numbers is done as they are believed to come up more often. Another system is to bet on the numbers that have not come up for a while because it is believed that their turn is overdue. Yet another system is to bet on more than one number to increase the chances of winning at every spin, but the payout is considerably reduced when betting this way.
The previously mentioned "systems" are not scientific, but they do make it easier to decide where to place your chips. There are specific roulette methods or systems, money management systems, or both. The most valuable system is a system whereby the player manages his/her money, and plans ahead of time when to stop playing.
When each player buys-in different colored chips are given to them so bets from various players are distinguishable. When you are finished playing, you exchange the colored chips with cash chips - provided you have any left! The special roulette chips MUST be exchanged for the cash chips because the roulette chips hold no cash value. You take the cash chips to the cash desk where they will give you actual cash money in exchange. Of course, this step is done automatically for you when you are playing roulette online.
When playing roulette, you place your bets on the numbers (any of the numbers including the zero or double zero) on the table layout, or on the outside. When everyone at the table has had a chance to place their bets, the dealer will start the spin and launch the ball. Just before the ball is about to drop over the numbered slots, the dealer calls out 'no more bets'. From then on no one is allowed to place or change their bets until the play has finished and the winning bet has been paid out and all the losing bets have been collected.
THE HOUSE ADVANTAGE
The house advantage is 2.7% on a single zero table. While on a double zero table the house advantage is 5.26% which works out to be 7.9% on the five-number bet (0-00-1-2-3). The house advantage is gained when the dealer pays the winners a chip or two less than what it would have been if there was no advantage.EN PRISON
This rule applys to even-money bets only, and only at some casinos. If the ball lands on zero, certain casinos will let the players either take half his/her bet back or leave it "en prison" (in prison) for another spin of the roulette wheel. If the following spin the outcome is zero again, then the whole bet is lost.LA PARTAGE
This rule is similar to the en prison rule, except in the "La Partage" case the player loses half of their bet and doesn't get the option of leaving it "En Prison" for another spin. This applies when the outcome is zero, and refers to the"outside" even money bets red/black, high/low, odd/even. The casino edge on the 'even-money bets' are cut in half when the 'En Prison' or 'La Partage" rules are in effect. So a bet on Red on a double zero table with the la partage rule or the en prison rule has a 2.63% house edge where as the same bet on a single zero roulette table has a house edge of 1.35%.THE PAYOUTS
A straight-up bet, a bet that is only on one number pays 35 to 1. You collect 37 with out the house advantage, but with a house advantage you collect 36 or 38 in the USA on double zero wheels.FRENCH and European ROULETTE RULES
The French roulette rules are like the European roulette rules they both have the same 37 numbered wheel, with one zero however they have a different table layout for the outside bets.
The player odds in French roulette are better than on the American roulette wheel (double zero), but the sames as the European wheel (only one zero). The players can loose 50% of their even-money bets when the outcome is zero which is known as the 'La Partage' rule.
The object of the game is still the same - predict which number out of the possible 37 the ball will land on. To follow are the French terms, and equivalent English terms for the various roulette bets:
INSIDE BETS
OUTSIDE BETS
The house odds are higher in American Roulette, meaning that the house earns more. Whereas American Roulette Wheel has 38 partitions, two zeros (one sigle and one double zero) and a house advantage of 5.26%. The European Roulette Table for the players is that American Roulette will earn the house 52 cents for every $10.00 wagered, and European Roulette earns the house a mor modest 27 cents for every $10.00. You can imagine what a difference these odds add up to for a regular player with a budget of, say $200.00 a session.
